She Rules Her Life Like a Bird in Flight
Inspired by the ethereal stage style of Stevie Nicks, this couture kimono is one of the most labor-intensive pieces I've ever created.
Every kimono begins with three luxurious hand-beaded silk burnout (dévoré) chiffon shawls.
The silk burnout alone is extraordinary. Layers of silk are selectively dissolved from the fabric, revealing sheer, luminous patterns that seem to float across the silk chiffon. The result is a textile with incredible depth, movement, and lightness.
Each shawl is then adorned with extensive hand-applied beadwork, creating remarkable texture and dimension throughout.
Transforming three shawls into one seamless garment is where the real work begins.
Nearly every seam that needs to be sewn is covered in delicate beadwork. Before construction can even begin, the beads along each seam must be painstakingly removed by hand—one by one. Only then can the shawls be carefully cut, shaped, and sewn together.
Once the kimono is complete, the beadwork is meticulously restored so the design flows uninterrupted across the garment, making it appear as though it was always meant to exist this way.
The process takes several days and an extraordinary amount of patience.
Finished with a luxurious hand-dyed silk satin band that frames the neckline, front opening, and dramatic sleeves, the result is a piece that feels both impossibly light and richly substantial.
She moves like silk.
